Brandi Carlile moves from Opening Act to Headliner

Who is Brandi Carlile?

That's a question Community Theatre patrons were asking just a coupleo fyears ago when the singer songwriter opened for Chris Isaak.

Memorable about that performance -- the audio system cut off in the middle of her set -- forcing her to go acoustic for a few minutes prior to the problem being fixed.

Well, lots of people know who Brandi is now. She's a headliner, and returning to the Mayo Center Thursday night, July 29 at 8 pm.Tickets are $32-47. Box office is 973-539-8008.

A gifted singer/songwriter whose rich voice and literate storytelling belie her youth (she was only 23 when she released her major-label debut), Brandi Carlile was born in the small town of Ravensdale, WA, an isolated community 50 miles from Seattle. With few neighbors or friends nearby, Carlile grew up learning to make her own entertainment, camping and hiking in the nearby woods and teaching herself to sing. Carlile grew up listening to the classic country music her parents doted on (Patsy Cline remains Carlile's favorite singer), and she made her stage debut at the age of eight after she was taken to a local country radio show by her mother.

At 17, Carlile picked up the guitar, having developed a taste for rock & roll through Elton John's classic albums of the 1970s (she cites Tumbleweed Connection as a particular favorite), and she began hitting the Seattle bar scene, playing anywhere she could get a gig (including a stint singing backup for an Elvis Presley tribute act). While playing clubs, she encountered a band called the Fighting Machinists, featuring twin brothers Tim Hanseroth on guitar and Phil Hanseroth. Impressed by their instrumental skills and spot-on harmonies, Carlile became an instant fan of the Fighting Machinists, and when the group broke up, she persuaded the Hanseroth twins to form a group with her. While they started out as an aggressive rock & roll band, Carlile's emotionally powerful songwriting and acoustic guitar work soon became the dominant component of their sound, and they began touring regularly, headlining small venues and opening shows for Dave Matthews, Shawn Colvin, and India.Arie.

In 2000, Carlile recorded the first of several self-released recordings that sold briskly at shows, and in 2005 she was signed to Columbia Records, releasing a self-titled album later that same year. The album earned enthusiastic reviews, and Carlile was named one of 2005's "Artists to Watch" by Rolling Stone. In 2006, Carlile and her band began work on her second Columbia album, with T Bone Burnett producing. Titled The Story, it was released in spring 2007. Give Up the Ghost followed two years later in 2009.

Opening will be Good Old War. Maybe a few years down the line, they will headline.

A Taste of New Orleans in Morristown

Two of America’s great cultural ambassadors bring together the soul of New Orleans with the joy of Gospel as The Community Theatre at Mayo Center for the Performing Arts presents “Down by the Riverside,” featuring the Blind Boys of Alabama and Preservation Hall Jazz Band on Friday, January 29, 2010. Tickets are $52-77.

The Blind Boys of Alabama thrill and inspire audiences the world over. Formed in 1939, The Blind Boys still continue to create critically acclaimed recordings and reach new career heights even today. In recent years the group has won four consecutive Grammy Awards, were featured on 60 Minutes, Regis & Kelly, The Tonight Show and The Late Show with David Letterman, performed on the 2005 Grammy Awards telecast, and appeared in the 2003 movie The Fighting Temptations alongside Beyonce and Cuba Gooding Jr. They sang a Phil Collins tune in Disney’s Brother Bear animated film, and were also the inspiration for the Steven Bochco TV series Blind Justice. The Blind Boys have also been inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and awarded the NEA’s Heritage Fellowship for Lifetime Achievement, as well as many other prestigious honors, earning them the true distinction of “living gospel legends.”

Dedicated to preserving and perpetuating New Orleans Jazz, the world renowned, Preservation Hall Jazz Band derives its name from the venerable music venue founded in 1961 by Allan and Sandra Jaffe. Located in the heart of the French Quarter, Preservation Hall presents New Orleans Jazz on a nightly basis. Post Katrina, the band’s mission became increasingly important as a result of the severe physical and cultural loss due to the flooding of New Orleans. The son of the founders and Creative Director, Ben Jaffe, co founded The New Orleans Musicians Hurricane Relief which continues to operate today as Sweet Home New Orleans: Renew Our Music. The band’s response to the destruction was the release of “Made In New Orleans: The Hurricane Sessions” a scrapbook of Preservation Hall memorabilia from the Preservation Hall archives, new recordings and tracks recovered from the flooded Seasaint Studios as well as a DVD of historic Preservation Hall performances. The band was awarded the 2006 National Medal of Arts by the National Endowment for the Arts, the highest level of recognition by the Federal Government. Today, the band is comprised of musicians all born and raised in New Orleans.
Many have performed together for over 40 years. The band tours worldwide carrying on the musical legacy and varied traditions of New Orleans.

Magic in Morristown Saturday Afternoon

Experience the amazing illusions of Jason Bishop when he brings his cutting edge magic show to The Community Theatre at Mayo Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, January 9, 2010 at 3 pm and 7 pm. All seats are $25.

From his breathtaking Double Levitation to his cutting edge Op-Art and Plasma illusions, Jason Bishop features stunning & original state of the art magic. As America’s hottest Illusionist, Jason Bishop might have a person passing through his body one moment or make goldfish appear from nowhere the next. Bishop is an international award-winning illusionist who was the youngest person to win the Magician’s Alliance of Eastern States Stage Award and one of the youngest people to compete in the Society of American Magicians World-Class competition.

One thing that distinguishes Bishop is his virtuosity. Each show features award winning sleight of hand, exclusive grand illusions and close-up magic projected onto a huge movie screen. No other touring illusionist showcases such a diverse array of talents. Additionally, the show is delivered with a totally modern energy and an outstanding rock & pop soundtrack.

The show is surprisingly funny and truly magical. Bishop cuts through the usual hype and focuses on entertaining audiences with one remarkable illusion after another. Each routine is presented in his unique style. Some pieces feature more laughs than are typically expected from an illusionist, while other effects literally demonstrate sleight of hand skill performed at a world-class level.

Jason engages the audience on and offstage. He touches them with a snow filled theatre and piques their imaginations when a borrowed dollar bill generously transforms into a one hundred dollar bill. Intelligent lighting, engaging audience participation and countless costume changes by his assistant Kim Hess, are added elements that help make each performance unforgettable.
